The third trimester of pregnancy occurs when you are 28 to 40 weeks pregnant. In the third trimester the stomach is getting bigger, so that new complaints or discomfort can appear. This third trimester, Moms will also start to be enthusiastic about preparing for birth, because in three months you can meet your beloved baby.
The reason is, complaints will be felt more often by prospective mothers considering the development of the baby who is getting bigger before his birth. In this third trimester, the fetus has quite complete organs and is focused on increasing body weight, increasing fat, and lung maturation. In addition to fetal growth, Moms will also face physical and emotional challenges with increasing quantities.
"The baby's development is around 1 kg until birth can reach 3.5 kg. The average week increases by 100-150gr, when it is near the time of birth it can increase to 200 grams per week," said the Obstetrics and Gynecologist at the hospital. St. Carolus dr. Noviyani Sugiarto, SpOG in a dialogue with the Makuku Family.
Dr. Noviyani said there are several things that you should watch out for when you enter the third trimester of pregnancy.
One of them is the weight of the fetus, whether it is normal or even below average. dr. Noviyani advises pregnant women to be consistent in managing a healthy diet until the baby is born. Nutritious food nutrition is needed to support the growth and development of the fetus which is entering a crucial period. He gave an example, if the percentile is below the average (less than 5), it means that the weight (fetus) is still lacking.
"Therefore, the food must be improved, because nutrition in pregnancy in the third trimester has a major effect on fetal brain development, which is growing very rapidly, so food, nutrition and DHA need to be met," said dr. Noviyani.
Then, what are the common complaints you feel in the third trimester of pregnancy? dr. Noviyani said that some complaints would make the pregnant woman's body condition uncomfortable.
In addition to the factor of increasing the size of the fetus, the complaints that make pregnant women uncomfortable are caused by hormonal changes and various other changes that are the response of the pregnant woman's body before the birth of the baby.
1. Fatigue
This symptom is commonly felt by pregnant women because the size of the stomach is getting bigger. The baby's weight gain can make the mother exhausted. According to dr. Noviyani, fatigue is a sign of the body, that pregnant women need to rest. So reducing activity and resting can help overcome fatigue. Eat enough food and healthy snacks to maintain energy during pregnancy.
If the fatigue persists even though the pregnant woman is resting, the pregnant woman can consult a doctor. Sometimes, severe fatigue can be triggered by anemia in pregnancy. Therefore, it is sometimes necessary to re-check hemoglobin in the third trimester.
2. Pain under the stomach
This symptom is also called pain in the symphysis which makes pregnant women feel pain in the pubic area. If this complaint is felt occasionally, and is not accompanied by other symptoms such as spotting or vaginal bleeding, this pain is nothing to worry about. This problem can be overcome by using a pregnant corset, sleeping in a comfortable position, avoiding sudden changes in position, and reducing activity when complaints arise.
3. Back Pain
6 out of 10 pregnant women will experience back pain symptoms. This symptom occurs because the pregnant body supports heavier weights since the fetus is growing. Back pain is centered on the joints and muscles in the pelvis and lower back.
Steps that can be taken to overcome this problem are sitting with a chair that can support the back, do not sit or stand for too long, often stretch between sittings, a comfortable sleeping position, compress or rub the back with warm balm, small exercise, and learn to relax.
4. Swollen Legs
In the third trimester, swollen feet are caused by the increased volume of blood and fluids in the body during pregnancy and is experienced by 75 percent of pregnant women. Pregnant women can raise or support the legs higher than the buttocks, lie down if standing or sitting for too long, sit with support for the feet, and use comfortable shoes.
5. Pubic Bone Pain
There are two types of pubic bone pain symptoms experienced by pregnant women. First, pain that appears temporarily and also pain that appears continuously or Pelvic girdle pain.
"If the pain occurs temporarily due to pressure and stretching of the muscles and ligaments that support the uterus, or pressure on the nerves leading to the cervix. If the pain lasts for a long time or is called pelvic gridle pain, it is caused by relaxant hormones, which cause stretching of the pelvic bones, so that the pelvis becomes unstable. stable and painful when the baby's head presses down," said dr. Noviyani
Dr. Novi advised pregnant women to wear a corset and reduce activities that involve both hips such as going up and down stairs to reduce pain.
6. Gastric Complaints
Approaching birth, the stomach also sometimes experiences complaints again like the first trimester. Hormonal changes such as the first trimester can occur again. This can be circumvented by adjusting the diet to be more regular.
"Eat little but often, drink lots of water (2.5 - 3 liters per day), don't eat late," added dr. Noviyani
7. Shortness of breath
The condition of the growing uterus will press the lungs. As a result, pregnant women will experience a feeling of shortness of breath or stuffiness. However, dr. Novi said that if the symptoms are mild, it is common in pregnant women and is not dangerous.
"An enlarged baby will press the lungs as well. So, it is very natural if there are complaints of difficulty breathing (gasp)," said dr. Noviyani
What Should Moms Prepare?
- Moms should consult a gynecologist more often than in the previous trimester.
- Prepare delivery equipment starting from breastfeeding clothes, change of clothes, towels, special pregnancy pads, gloves and others.
- Pay attention to whether the amniotic fluid is sufficient. If not, then you have to drink a lot.
"It can be seen from the ultrasound. Is the amniotic fluid sufficient or reduced," explained dr. Noviyani
- Position of the placenta, whether blocking the birth process or is it appropriate.
- Is the baby's head down?
- Practice breathing techniques for mothers who gave birth normally.
- Practice pushing positions such as half sitting, tilted to the left, embracing the legs.
- Check the flow (blood) mother to fetus with ultrasound.
- Regularly maintain a diet by reducing excess sugar intake.
According to dr. Noviyani, if the pregnancy condition is good and the doctor allows you to exercise, regular exercise such as brisk walking or pregnancy exercise is highly recommended, because it can provide many benefits for the mother and baby as well as the smooth delivery process.
"It is hoped that the mother will continue to exercise actively (about 30 minutes per day) so that she has enough energy for a normal delivery. You can walk briskly or play gym ball, so that the baby's head enters the pelvis. It is very important to do heart and physical preparation in the third trimester. Take a pregnancy exercise class, so that you know how to push and how to regulate your breathing during labor, read or watch videos on how to push. Continue to exercise every 30 minutes, besides making the baby smarter, pregnant women can have enough energy during childbirth," concluded dr. Noviyani
