Every parent wants their child to be born safely, complete without any flaws and healthy. But there are some worrisome conditions in newborns. One of them is jaundice which is often experienced by newborns. Because many do not know about this jaundice, it is not surprising that parents panic when they find their baby with this condition. For that, parents must know the causes of jaundice, what are the symptoms and how to overcome them.
Jaundice is a condition in which the skin and whites of the baby's eyes turn yellow. About 60 percent of newborns do experience jaundice or in the medical world it is called jaundice. Jaundice usually afflicts newborns and occurs between 2-3 days after birth. The cause of jaundice itself is a buildup of bilirubin in the baby's blood. In newborns, the normal bilirubin level is below 5 mg/dL after 24 hours of birth. While high bilirubin levels cause jaundice according to their age as follows:
- Infants aged less than 1 day: more than 10 mg/dL
- Infants aged 1-2 days: more than 15 mg/dL
- Infants aged 2-3 days: more than 18 mg /dL
- Infants older than 3 days: more than 20 mg/dL
Jaundice in infants can also be due to breastfeeding or breastfeeding jaundice. Jaundice due to breastfeeding occurs in infants in the first few years of life. It can occur both in babies who are not breastfeeding well or when the mother's milk is low and in healthy babies who are breastfed. At its peak, jaundice in infants lasts in the second or third week or more than one month.
Differences in blood type between mother and baby or Rh or ABO incompatibility can also affect bilirubin levels in the baby's body. According to experts, the risk of jaundice in infants increases when the mother's blood type is O, while the baby's blood type is A, B or AB. In cases of blood group incompatibility, the mother's body will make antibodies that attack the baby's red blood cells, which causes the baby to turn yellow.
Symptoms of Jaundice that Parents Must Know
Although jaundice in newborns is not dangerous, please note that levels of yellow pigment that reach more than 25 mg/dL are at risk for brain damage. Jaundice can occur if the liver cannot efficiently process red blood cells when they are broken down. This is very normal in healthy newborns and will usually go away on its own. Jaundice will disappear by itself within 1-2 weeks. however, in infants who are exclusively breastfed, jaundice can persist for a month or more.
Symptoms of jaundice that appear in infants include yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes. Yellowing of the baby's skin is usually seen on the head, face, mouth, palms of the hands and soles of the feet. The yellow color of the baby's skin can also be clearly seen in the area of the skin that is pressed with the finger. In addition to these symptoms, signs of jaundice in babies are that the baby looks always sleepy and looks weak. The baby does not have an appetite or arranges it less than usual. Dark urine color and pale stool color which should be yellow or orange in color.
How to Handling Babies with Jaundice
Although it can disappear by itself within a few weeks, jaundice with moderate or severe severity requires special treatment in the hospital. Usually this treatment includes ultraviolet light or UV light therapy. Where the baby will be placed under a fluorescent lamp that emits light in the blue-green spectrum. Later the light can change the shape and structure of the bilirubin molecule so that it can be excreted in urine and feces.
UV light therapy is quite effective for treating jaundiced babies and don't worry because it doesn't have any side effects in the future. Treatment for this yellow baby, carried out for at least 24 hours. If it is still needed then this UV light therapy will be continued for 2x2 hours without a break. And, maximum care for yellow babies with UV light for 5x24 hours. During the therapy, your little one will be shirtless using only a diaper and eye protection.
So that the therapy that is carried out goes well and your little one is not fussy during treatment, it is better to use a comfortable diaper. Make sure the diaper used has a high absorption capacity, especially since your little one will excrete urine and feces during treatment. So parents must anticipate it with good quality diapers. This is also to prevent the emergence of new problems such as diaper rash.
