An active child is one of the characteristics of optimal baby growth. But sometimes parents can't tell the difference between hyperactive children, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders) and autism. Although it looks almost the same, in fact hyperactive children, ADHD and autism are different so parents should not do self-diagnosis

to the surrounding environment that easily labels their children as hyperactive, unfocused, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders) and Autism. So what's the difference?

According to a pediatrician with a sub-specialist in neurology ,Dr. Setyo Handryastuti, Sp.A(K)  explained that a very active child is a child who loves to move, but can still stop and behave calmly when asked or the situation requires it. "A child like this can play and kick a ball for 1 minute and then 5 minutes later can calmly look at books."

While hyperactive children are difficult to calm down and stay still, always moving, holding something, talking constantly, even running when the situation requires the child to be quiet and calm. Usually hyperactive children also play violently so as to injure their friends, like hitting other children and always want to hold objects.

dr. Handry added that it is actually still difficult for toddlers to differentiate between very active or hyperactive children. It should be remembered that toddlers, especially boys, are still in the stage of gross motor development, especially complex movement skills such as the ability to jump, climb, cycle, play ball, run, so they still need a lot of movement training.

Fundamental differences in hyperactive children, ADHD and Autism

There are several things that must be considered in distinguishing hyperactive children, ADHD and autism. dr. Handry said that the children who are very active or hyperactive have speech delays or not, there is interference with two-way interaction or not, there is repetitive/strange behavior or not.

"If there isn't, then don't label the child as Autistic. Because in autism the problem is speech/language delay and 2-way interaction. Children with autism often show symptoms of hyperactivity, unfocused, but what stands out and needs to be seen is whether there is a speech delay and 2-way interaction disorders, "said dr. Handry on MAKUKU's IG live with Klinik Anakku BSD on April 6, 2022.

While the criteria that must be met to say a child is diagnosed with ADHD are the presence of symptoms of inattention/hyperactivity-impulsivity that persist for at least 6 months, interfere with activities  daily. The symptoms of inattention and/or hyperactivity appear before the age of 12  years, and the symptoms of inattention and/or hyperactivity interfere with/decrease the quality of social/social life, academic achievement, and work.

“There are several screenings for ADHD, the youngest age to be screened is 4-5 years old. Screening is continued with a diagnosis,” explained dr. Handy.

In contrast to ADHD, autism can be screened early, as young as 18 months of age. Many screening tools for Autism, this screening must also be followed by a diagnosis. It must be remembered that the symptoms that appear are certainly according to the age of the child and differ from one child to another.
