The challenge after giving birth is to exclusively breastfeed your little one. Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended starting from newborns to 6 months and even until the child is two years old. The desire to breastfeed your child sometimes experiences obstacles such as clogged milk until a little milk comes out.
Mothers certainly want to know what causes breast milk to come out not smoothly. dr. Santi Sri Wulandari from St. Hospital Carolus explained that breast milk that is not smooth does not mean there is or there is no milk. Even on the first day of breastfeeding, many people think that milk will flood out like a mother who has breastfed. Even though the milk on the first day does come out a little because it adjusts to the baby's stomach.
dr. Santi added that the milk that comes out a little is also influenced by the oxytocin hormone. This oxytocin hormone will decrease if the mother experiences fatigue, sadness, and pain after giving birth. So that the oxytocin hormone cannot work optimally in producing breast milk. Therefore, postnatal preparation of mothers is very important which can affect the success of breastfeeding.
“Mothers after giving birth with a long labor process by induction, SC, failed induction have a tendency to have their milk jammed because the mother is in pain or tired. The oxytocin hormone cannot work optimally,” explained dr. Santi.
According to dr. Santi, there are indeed mothers who are not able to produce breast milk but the number is small, only 1-5% of the total population. Therefore, basically there is no term breast milk that does not come out. So, even if only a small amount of a woman's breasts come out, it can certainly produce milk for the baby. To prevent mothers from experiencing stress due to a little milk coming out after giving birth, it is better to know or learn about breastfeeding and breastfeeding.
“Preparation for breastfeeding can be done and is recommended during pregnancy in the third trimester. If anyone wants to go faster, it's not a problem, "explained dr. Santi.
The Right Latch For Successful Breastfeeding
Attachment to the breastfeeding process is very important for it to run smoothly. If the latch during breastfeeding is not right, then the baby will not be able to get breast milk optimally. Attachment itself is the way in which the baby inserts the nipple along with the dark area around the nipple called the areola.
"Pay attention to whether the attachment is correct or not. If the position and attachment is not correct then the milk that comes out a little. Because babies only suck from the nipple which is only a channel,” said dr. Santi.
In addition, also pay attention to the most comfortable position when your baby is breastfeeding. Because, breastfeeding on the right and left breasts are different. “People think big breasts make it easier to breastfeed. Still the practice must see a lactation counselor before birth. Because when the baby is born, the baby cries, most mothers will feel panicked,".
While related to lactation massage to facilitate breastfeeding, lactation counselors can teach mothers and fathers so they can do it themselves at home. The limit of lactation massage itself is the pain but it needs to be emphasized.
Should You Take Breast Milk Booster?
Regarding breast milk booster, dr. Santi explained the beginning of laktogogue. Reporting from the IDAI page, laktogogue is a drug or substance that is believed to help stimulate, maintain or increase milk production in nursing mothers. Today, many drugs, foods and herbal remedies are recommended as lactogugues.
For example, some regions have their own belief in laktogogue as a nutritious and useful daily food. Like in East Nusa Tenggara, they believe that laktogogues that can increase breast milk are peanuts, corn, and Moringa leaves. While laktogogue in Java such as katuk leaves, banana flowers and banana heart. While in Australia the famous country is fenugreek.
"In principle, if the mother is healthy, then she can produce breast milk and take good care of her baby because her body is fit," said dr. Santi.
To facilitate the production of breast milk, according to dr. Santi can be done in an easy way. As well as sufficient fluid needs to keep the body hydrated. In the world of breastfeeding counseling, according to dr. Santi will not be prohibited from consuming breast milk booster as long as it is beneficial for breastfeeding mothers, but it is also not recommended.
