Parents need to be aware of diaper rash as this condition can cause babies to feel uncomfortable, fussy, and at risk of more serious skin infections if not treated promptly. Diaper rash occurs when a baby's sensitive skin is exposed to moisture, friction, or irritation from chemicals in the diaper. This can aggravate the baby's skin problems, such as redness, swelling, and even blisters.

In addition, a baby rash that is not treated properly can disrupt the baby's sleep and affect their appetite, thus impacting their growth and development. With proper vigilance and prevention, such as changing diapers regularly and using quality products, parents can keep their baby's skin healthy and comfortable.

How to Deal with Diaper Rash with ABCDE Steps

Diaper rash can indeed be prevented by paying attention to several things. However, if diaper rash has already occurred, there are easy ways for treatment that moms can apply at home. Here are the ABCDE steps based on IDAI recommendations:

A (air out)

Let the diaper area dry in the open air for as long as possible. Fresh air can help a baby's skin dry on its own and reduce moisture that can trigger the growth of rash-causing bacteria.

B (Barrier)

Apply a cream containing zinc oxide or petroleum on the diaper area to protect the skin (barrier) in the diaper area. These ingredients have anti-inflammatory properties that can help relieve inflammation of irritated skin. It also acts as a skin protector by forming a barrier that prevents friction and irritation.

C (Clean)

Keep the diaper area clean by changing soiled diapers immediately. Routinely changing diapers about every 2-3 hours or as often as needed is the best way to prevent and manage diaper rash in babies.

D (Disposable diapers)

When a child has a diaper rash, disposable diapers should be used. Disposable diapers are usually designed to absorb liquids so that they are drier and help keep the baby's skin moist and the risk of bacterial growth due to exposure to urine and feces can be minimized.

E (Educate)
