During pregnancy, changes can occur in almost all parts of the pregnant woman's body. Even pregnant women are also susceptible to various health problems, one of which is skin disorders. This condition can make pregnant women feel insecure during pregnancy. There are various skin diseases that often appear in pregnant women and make them uncomfortable.

A number of factors can cause skin problems during pregnancy. Among them are due to changes in hormone levels to blood circulation in the body. All changes in pregnant women are also affected by the decrease in immune system function to the increase in body weight that occurs during pregnancy.

Various skin diseases in pregnant women

During pregnancy, hormonal changes in a woman's body can affect the skin and cause some common skin problems. Here are some skin diseases that often appear during pregnancy:

1. Dark spots on the face (melasma)

During pregnancy, pregnant women can also be hit by black spots on the face or commonly referred to as melasma. To prevent more black spots, pregnant women can use sunscreen with SPF 15 and safe ingredients when leaving the house. In addition, use an umbrella or hat to protect the skin from direct sun exposure.

2. Acne (pregnancy pimples)

Acne may appear in the first trimester of pregnancy. This acne is caused by hormonal changes in pregnant women and an increase in oil production on the skin so that it is prone to acne.

3. Stretch marks

The most common type of skin disease that occurs during pregnancy is stretch marks. Stretch marks are scars in the form of white streaks on the surface of the skin. Stretch marks occur due to rapid or excessive stretching of the skin due to drastic weight gain. Usually stretch marks appear on the abdomen, upper arms, hips, thighs, buttocks and breasts.

4. Prurigo

Various skin diseases such as prurigo can occur at any gestational age. However, cases of this skin disease are arguably rare, only occurring in 1 in 300 pregnancies. Changes in the immune system in pregnant women trigger the appearance of prurigo during pregnancy. The symptoms are characterized by bumps on the skin anywhere like being bitten by an insect. Unfortunately, prurigo causes itching for several months until delivery.

5. Varicose veins

Changes in the pregnant body are natural, especially on the skin. Varicose veins in pregnant women are usually in the form of bluish streaks and can be seen on the feet, legs and calves. Varicose veins can be prevented by regular exercise so that blood circulation is smoother.

6. Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP)

Changes in skin color to yellow accompanied by itching during pregnancy can be a sign of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP). This disease is a disorder of the liver caused by obstructed bile flow. The itching is most often felt on the palms of the hands and feet and gets worse at night.

7.  Pruritic urticarial papules and plaque of pregnancy (PUPP)

PUPP is a skin condition characterized by the appearance of reddish patches and bumps accompanied by itching during pregnancy. In general, this type of skin disease appears in the third trimester and attacks the abdomen, thighs, buttocks and chest. PUPP is caused by the weakening of the immune system.

8. Pruritic folliculitis

Entering the second and third trimester pregnant women are prone to this type of skin disease. The appearance of pruritic folliculitis is characterized by symptoms of reddish spots on the arms, chest, abdomen to the back. Pregnant women who experience this type of skin disease will not feel itchy. And, pruritic folliculitis will disappear on its own after 2-8 weeks after giving birth.

9. Herpes gestationis

Herpes gestationis is an autoimmune disease in pregnant women. Usually this skin disease appears in pregnant women during the second and third trimesters. The symptoms of herpes gestationis itself are fluid-filled bumps that spread throughout the body, especially the abdomen. According to some studies, pregnant women who experience this type of skin disease will be prone to giving birth to premature babies.
