World Children's Cancer Day is always celebrated on February 15 every year. this year the theme is “Better Survival” and can be achieved with #throughyourhand.
World Children's Cancer Day is celebrated to raise awareness about cancer among children. Because, most parents find it difficult not to realize the danger signs of cancer that appear in children.
contrastto cancer in adults, cancer in children is more difficult to detect because children in general have not been able to express what they are feeling. Therefore, it is very important for parents to know the signs and symptoms of cancer in children, so that treatment can be carried out immediately and the cure rate will be greater.
According to the pediatrician at St. Carolus, dr. Catur Sapariyanto, the type of cancer that often attacks children in Indonesia based on WHO data, there are six types. The types are as follows:
- Leukemia is a malignant disease of blood cells originating from the bone marrow. symptoms, often pale, easy to lose consciousness or fainting, red spots all over the body or bleeding and swollen gums and enlargement of the stomach due to the liver and spleen.
- Retinoblastoma is a primary malignant tumor of the eye that is often found in children under 5 years of age. Symptoms include white eyes, cat's eyes, squint with yellow spots when highlighted with a flashlight, and blurred vision.
- Malignant lymphoma is a primary malignancy of solid lymph tissue.
- Lysis of tumors or cancers around the kidney area.
- Glioma is a type of tumor that occurs in the brain and spinal cord.
According to dr. Catur Sapariyanto cancer in children is difficult to detect but can be recognized through its initial symptoms. while the symptoms themselves depend on the type of cancer. dr. Chess also urges that if you see unusual symptoms in your child, you should immediately check with the nearest health facility.
“If I divide it into two, there are water and solid cancers such as leukemia or blood cancer. while solid cancer is an example of bone cancer, depending on the location of the lump,” explained dr. Chess.
Chronic and serious diseases in children can be avoided, if parents can apply SMART. CERDIK is an acronym for Periodic Health Checks, Get Rid of Cigarette Smoke, Diligent Physical Activities/Sports, Healthy and Balanced Diet, Get Enough Rest and Manage Stress.
